For my son’s eighth birthday party we decided to have it at our local bowling alley. To keep with the bowling theme I decided to make a “bowling pin” cake. Thanks to this site for ideas on all the sports theme cakes.

I baked the cake in a 9 x 13 inch pan as normal. Once the cake cooled I cut it into the shape of a bowling pin. I frosted it white, added some coconut (per request of my son, optional) and some clear sprinkles to make it shine. I bought some Yogo brand fruit strips for the stripes. Fortunately they had the kind that was red and white stripes to begin with.

I then added some red piping around the cake to clean it all up. I really liked the way it came out. The bowling ball on the cake was the party invitation I had ordered through orientaltrading.com. I had it laminated and put it on the cake to complete the look.

These cupcakes were made for a customer who wanted sports theme cakes. I made yellow and chocolate cupcakes and buttercream frosting. Fondant toppers-each hand molded (the pins took forever!)

My son was having a fifth birthday party at the bowling alley and I searched online for sports theme cakes and found this cake. You take a round cake pan and make the ball. I used two sheet cakes for the pin and “pasted them together, cutting out the center to hold the ball. Use two tea lite candles for your candles and for the holes. It was a BIG hit!

This bowling cake was easy to do. First bake and frost the cake. Then pipe in a starburst pattern using purple icing and fill in with star tip. The pins are made from white fondant. Just roll out store-bought fondant and cut shape from pattern using sharp paring knife. (I got this pattern from free clip art on line.)

The bowling ball is made of two shades of fondant – pink and white – rolled together to give the swirly look of a real bowling ball. My seven-year-old loved it.

Good luck with your own sports theme cakes.

Our daughter requested a bowling party this year for her birthday. As I’ve done each year for her (and she’s now come to expect) I made a custom cake to match the party theme so this year was sports theme cakes.

The ball was made using Wilton’s ball pan. She insisted it be pink. I frosted it with homemade butter cream using shortening instead of butter. I’m not the best froster but have found that if you put on a fairly smooth coat and then let it dry slightly you can gently pat it smooth. I used inverted Hershey’s kisses to make the holes.

For the pins I baked a 9″x9″ cake and cut it in half. I then used a sharp knife to cut out the shape of the pins following it up with white frosting and the decorative details. I wish we’d had a wood cutting board as that would have made a lane-like serving board. Instead I made due with a foil coated plastic cutting board.

I made this cake for my daughter’s 7th birthday. I searched for sports theme cakes and found this one. It was so easy to make.

I used a template for the bowling pin. Use a round oven safe bowl for the bowling ball. And top it off with 3 tea light candles for the holes.

I had to think of some sports theme cakes for my son seeing as we had a bowling alley birthday party. He loves chocolate and his favorite color is blue. You could change the colors to fit your child’s preference.

I made the bowling pins from fondant and the blue is just carefully painted on with food coloring. I made the bowling ball from fondant that was dyed black. Most of the cake was iced with chocolate icing but I dyed some of the chocolate frosting black and that made the bowling lane.

What a FUN, EASY Bowling birthday cake!! First I baked a regular, double layer 10 inch round cake and frosted it with Maverick’s favorite color, blue. Then I baked another cake using the Wilton ball cake pan. I doweled the ball cake on top of the blue cake and frosted it with black buttercream.

To make this Bowling birthday cake black, start with CHOCOLATE icing instead of white. I used Wilton black food gel coloring to tint the chocolate icing. You don’t have to use as much black gel if you start with dark chocolate icing. Also remember that the color of the icing will get darker with time!

To make the ball look smooth like a bowling ball, first frost it with the black chocolate buttercream and let it set about 10 minutes. Then, take a paper towel or wax paper and gently press it over the icing on the ball. If it is set properly, the frosting will not stick, but instead, it will smooth out. (NOTE: if you are using a paper towel, the texture of the towel will transfer onto the frosting.) Don’t press too hard, just enough to smooth out the icing. I made a fun top border of bowling pins, and the bottom border was tiny black bowling balls. This came out to be a great birthday cake!

This was a very easy cake to make. I found the idea for it on Family Fun’s website and I expanded on the idea. My 6-year-old was having his party at a bowling alley. I made each side of the lane a different type of cake to connect the two (chocolate on one, vanilla on the other).

Each cake is a 9″x13″ which was then pieced together with frosting. The frosting color was made by mixing white frosting with chocolate and 10 drops of yellow food coloring. The bowling balls were made out of gumballs, the gutters Twizzlers, the “v” on the lane is chocolate chips, and the candles were handmade (whittled white Channukah candles) as all of the party stores around us were out of them.
