Surprise Fishing and Hunting Birthday Cake

This fishing and hunting cake was a first for me. I had never made a cake like this before.

A client contacted me to make a hobby themed surprise birthday cake. She wanted a mix between a hunting and fishing theme and she wanted a tackle box and a few other items on the cake. The client also wanted to have her husband’s favorite hat somewhere on the cake and his favorite beer on there as well.  I told the client I would need pictures of all the items he wanted on the cake.

I had no idea how to get the camo on fondant or how to make a sugar bottle.  I told the client I had concerns about the beer bottle and I may not be able to do it. I looked at buying a mold and found they ran around $60. I was not paying that much for one cake. So, I found a do it yourself youtube video and made my own mold.

The bottle turned out great, but because of time I had not figured out how to paint on the sugar glass. I ended up using the real label from a beer bottle. It turned out great for my first one.

I made the hat out of fondant. I do regret using cocoa powder to color the fondant because the brown coloring did not turn it the color I needed. In fact, the cocoa turned the fondant dry and crumbly. I formed the hat around a new hat I covered in cling wrap.  It worked great except it dried much slower and I didn’t realize it until it was the day to assembly. This was not the time to find this out. The hat cracked at the bill and if you zoom in you can probably see where I patched it.

The woodland camo was hand painted and I was very pleased with how it turned out for my first time painting on fondant.  I used 4 sheet cakes, using the measurements from a real tackle box and cut and carved them to make the cake.

All in all I was very pleased with the cake.
