Cool Mario Birthday Cake

My son decided his mom could do anything and showed me a very elaborate “Mario cake”. I did tell him it was his choice! The cake itself was fairly easy, 4-8 inch rounds frosted to look like the sky. The hardest part is crating the characters.

Mario has toothpicks inside his arms to hold them where they are and the “pipes” are really large dowels covered in MM fondant. This serves to look cool and hold the top layer  (I did have to transport this cake 35 miles put in two pieces). I used an orange peeler to make all the impressions in the bricks. It allowed uniform measuring as well.

Some of the images are 2-D and some are 3-D. I did start making the characters a day in advance and just let them dry. The coins are circles and I just cut the sides off to make them oblong looking. I just piped on with butter cream all the details like eyes, bolts, and question marks. In the end it was totally worth it! This however was only one of two cakes since I have twins I always get to make two different cakes.
